Low frequencies are one of the hardest elements of room acoustics to control. Bass waves have wavelengths measured in metres, so they build up particularly in the corners of a room, creating a characteristic boom that is hard to remove with wall absorbers alone.
The problem of booming bass affects virtually every small room – from home recording studios, through living rooms with home cinema systems, to bedrooms fitted out with a more elaborate audio setup. The smaller the room volume, the more strongly low-frequency resonances are felt, so it’s worth treating this topic as a priority right from the planning stage of any acoustic treatment.
Why bass builds up in corners
Due to their length, low-frequency waves reinforce each other at points where two or three surfaces meet – precisely in the corners between walls and ceiling. This phenomenon is responsible for the impression of “uneven” bass, where the sound is too strong in one part of the room and barely audible in another.
This phenomenon is closely tied to a room’s so-called room modes – resonant frequencies determined directly by the room’s dimensions. The more regular a room’s shape, for example close to a cube, the stronger and more problematic these resonances become, since they pile up at the same frequencies instead of spreading out.
How bass traps work
Bass traps are special panels, usually cylindrical, triangular, or square in shape, filled with dense, selected mineral wool that effectively absorbs low frequencies. The shape of the enclosure is mainly a visual matter – it is the thickness and density of the fill that determines the real effectiveness.
Unlike standard wall absorbers, bass traps are designed to make the most of corner space, increasing the effective thickness of absorbing material exactly where low-frequency acoustic pressure is highest. That’s why even a small trap placed precisely in a corner can outperform a much larger panel mounted flat on the middle of a wall.
Perforated panels as reinforcement
Some constructions additionally use a perforated panel or a thin sheet of metal inside the trap, allowing the panel to be tuned to a specific frequency range and increasing absorption efficiency for the chosen bass band. This kind of solution, sometimes called a membrane or panel resonator, allows targeting a specific problem frequency range identified during acoustic measurements of the room.
Where to place bass traps
Bass traps work best when placed exactly in the corners of a room – both vertical ones, between two walls, and horizontal ones, at the junction of wall and ceiling. In small studios or listening rooms, it is worth considering using several traps at once, in all available corners.
In practice, the most problematic corners tend to be those behind the listening position and behind the speakers, since that’s often where bass energy builds up most strongly. If the budget doesn’t allow treating all corners at once, it’s worth starting with these four key spots in the room.
Ceiling traps and bass clouds
Besides classic corner traps, some rooms also use larger bass panels mounted along the full length of a ceiling corner, sometimes called bass clouds. This works particularly well in elongated rooms, where the bass problem is concentrated along one edge of the ceiling.
